About The Artwork

"She Wears the Sky on Her Back" was inspired by a model I saw wearing a blue sweater. As she walked, the light caught the blue of her sweater and it seemed to be floating in the air. It reminded me of the feeling I see when bluebirds come to visit my yard - fleeting glimpses worth waiting for! Bluebirds are often described as "wearing the sky on their backs", and that is where I got the idea for the title. If you look carefully, you'll see the bluebird sitting next to the model. The painting is acrylic on canvas which has been attached to a treated birch wood panel. The surface is somewhat smooth but you can see the brushwork in the textures. The stark background is off black and red-brown. The angles of the background emphasize the pose of the model and bring your eye down to the "surprise" bluebird sitting next to her. The painting is framed in a minimal black wooden frame approximately 1" in width. The actual artwork is 24" x 26" x 1" but the finished size is 26" x 28" x 2".

I was once traveling with a close friend, photographing everything in sight, as any tourist does. I asked him, "Don't you want to take any photos?" He answered, "I like to remember things in my own way." What a profound statement - and one that I take seriously when I paint. My art is about remembering things . . . in my own way . . . and "disremembering" everything else. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, my artistic career began at an early age when I began painting with my mother on Sunday afternoons. Surrounded by art books, paintings and sculpture at home, I always knew I wanted to be a painter.
