Foreword to the Opening When we meet the artist for whom the creation of art is neither his profession nor the resource of his living we usually start thinking about his motivation. Why does Karol Kosik paint? Why does such a racionally orientated , busy and professionally sucessful man devotes almost all his free time to this seemingly pointless activity? There is no frustration of unfulfilled ambitions, not stout belief in his own genius, which amaze the world or at least his vicinity, not even naive expectation of small earnings. Karol Kosik is a reasonable person, aware of his limits although his rationality contrasts with his emotion, desire to express ineffable, to bring himself and his surroundings emotional experience. Rationale and emotions complement in his personality as the opposite forces of yin and yang in the Ancient Chinese philosophy, supporting each other and one cannot exist without the other. Their connection creates harmony, which is the essence of the world according to the Chinese philosophy of Taoism, to which human existence relates too. Searching for the harmony in life is in my opinion the motor driving Karol Kosik’s hand and mind to his painting works. Fine Art is the legendary power of yin that complements and supports the yang- rational, technical and business activities that are his profession. Karol Kosik had to decide on his personal preference immediately after his graduation. He chose the rational – graduated from a Technical University. Became a mechanical engineer, a designer of rail vehicles and later a manager and consultant in the engineering industry. He is still dedicated to this profession with success, but he has never stopped developing the other side of his personality linked with lines, shapes, colours and also emotions which can express these elements and evoke them in viewer. The early time of painting of Karol Kosik was not similar to most of amateur artists attending various courses and clubs, learning to draw from a live model or landscapes. He is a real autodidact whose ambition has always been to create something complex, finished even without knowledge of the anatomy of painting and elementary drawing processes. Therefore he is one of the authors of Naive Art, Art Brut or Outsider Art, as it is usually categorized as the art produced by non-professionals creating out of the traditional aesthetic standards.
