About The Artwork

Urban Graffiti Cityscapes Inspired by the mystique of the city, Urban Graffiti Cityscapes focuses on the symbiotic relationships of a cityscape’s three artistic elements and their effect on depth and space. One element is the diverse architectural styles of urban buildings. The placement and planning of these man-made structures makes each neighborhood visually different and aesthetically unique. In some cases the layout feels natural, with vast open spaces, while others portray a sense of the clutter and suffocation often associated with congested city neighborhoods. The second element is the hand drawn graffiti imagery that covers these structures. While graffiti can be an eyesore, in certain contexts it’s a work of art itself. Lending personality and character to the areas it’s exhibited in, graffiti can also capture the different tones and feelings of lower income neighborhoods compared to richer areas. The third element is the fusion of nature amid man-made structures. Like the city’s architecture, nature can be planned out and contained within artistic landscaping, or, like graffiti, appear randomly and sporadic. Think grass and weeds bursting through cracked sidewalks or vines and foliage wrapping around and overtaking a forgotten building or yard. Based on actual areas around New York City, investigating the relationship of these three elements creates a unique perspective of depth and, through creative interpretation, their visual effects on the space that surrounds them. At times these three elements co-exist, but more often then not, one element tends to overpower the rest. Space remains lost in the endless sea of graffiti while nature struggles to survive amid the depths of the urban architectural landscape. This piece has to do with air pollution. In the heart of the city, where the buildings are tallest and closest together, pollution is thick and the air quality is low. As you move out from the city into the more suburban areas, the pollution thins out, the air quality is better, and nature has a more prominent place and role.
