Tangle Painting

Exhibited at IAPS Exhibition in Albuquerque, 2017 with following description: After rain I happened upon a vernal pool in a California canyon. The scene was bleak, with white willow branches, pallid rocks, growths of grey weeds and the pale sky reflected in the pooled water. I felt a sense of wonder at the quiet messiness. This stirring was likely stimulated by my familiarity and love of the poetry of Gerard Manly Hopkins: “What would the world be, once bereft Of wet and of wildness? Let them be left O let them be left, wildness and wet Long live the weeds and the wilderness yet.” Inversnaid, 1918 On a sheet of pastel premier I began working with the most dominant colors of the rusty bank and the ochre reflections in the water. I laid in the structure of dark grey areas and developed the intricate counterpoint and tangle of marks with parchment white.
