About The Artwork
A fun piece playing with contrasting techniques, including an excerpt from Hans Holbien’s Danse Macabre (The Drunkard, 1526), this painting is a commentary on how social drinking hasn’t changed much in the past 500 years. The white was created by thickly priming the wood with white gesso before a thin layer of black primer, and then engraving into it with a number of knives, engraving and drypoint tools (it was a very experimental process finding what worked best. Hint: it was an exacto knife). The floating wine glass was a last minute touch, but one I’m very happy with. The portrait was painted from life, while pretty drunk myself. My motive was to try and get a looser painting coupled with a pretty rosy and drunk looking self, but I guess my drunk face has gotten better since my last attempt.
