About The Artwork

This is the first painting in 'The Fall of Light' series, which I am making from a series of specific photographs I made. It is a very meticulous, obsessive process right from the start, I pay attention to every detail along the way, and the labour becomes the fetish. (Taking the photograph, editing it, cutting the wood to fit the image, priming the board, smoothing it, making a drawing, transferring it onto the board, and finally painting and varnishing.) I really focus here on the way light hits and reflects off of the material of latex, creating shapes, patterns and colours. I manipulate the kind of light that is around the material when I photograph it, to make sure there is different colours and objects around, creating a distorted reflection of the surrounding reality. I like to blur the line here between the work being photo-realistic and abstract, as that will depend of the way the audience views it, and how familiar they are with latex sheeting. It also creates this tactile, haptic way of looking, really paying attention to the piece in front of you, and not assuming. There is no narrative or background within the painting, it becomes an object, a fetish. It seduces you, questions recognition, relatability, purpose, and intention. The surface is smooth, satin varnish finish, hanging hardware already installed. (This piece is a shaped board, not a rectangle, the board was cut to match the shape of the painting itself)

I am a London based painter born in Olsztyn, Poland. Currently my paintings combine the traditional visual of drapery and the fold with the modern highly reflective material of latex. They focus on the fall of light, and the colours and shapes that are created by the reflections. I consider my practice to be both hyper-realistic and abstract. The work tries to provoke a haptic way of looking, and seeks a connection to your feelings and senses. Seduction, desire and the fetish are some of the key ideas I consider during the making of the work. ***Full artist statement available on website***
