The Hart of the Green Wood is a large contemporary style oil painting of an ethereal deer stag in a clearing in a green forest. It is 40x40x1.5 inches. There are many shades of green and many transparent layers which give the painting a mystical fairy tale quality. It also catches the light in interesting ways - a little like a stained-glass window. It is the sort of tall tree green wood you see in dreams. The hart (a stag over 5 years old) stands on the right looking at something we can’t see. He is materialising and not quite of this world. Real deer have the habit of watching humans in their forests and then vanishing once they have finished staring at you. It always amazes me how such a large animal can do this so easily – as if they naturally have some magic to them. The painting was inspired by a walk I took in the Cowdray Forest (RH17 6QG) near Turners Hill. It is full of tall pine trees and ancient oaks and is worth a visit! Dedicated to all fellow dreamers and lovers of fairy tales. Painted on deep edge canvas, white edges, ready to hang, no frame needed.

About The Artwork

The Hart of the Green Wood is a big green oil painting of a deer stag in a green pine forest. It is 40x40x1.5 inches. The stag and the pine tree trunks are painted in pink, lilac and caramel shades which contrast with the many shades of green in the painting. The stag himself is either appearing or fading out which is something deer do seem to do when you see them in woodland. They stop and watch you and then suddenly vanish. I love this ethereal, fairy tale quality that they have and I also love the soothing effect of all the green overlapping paint layers. It was inspired by a pine forest in Cowdray, East Sussex where I usually spot a few fallow deer when walking there. The painting has a touch of magic to it which I always try to instil into the paintings I make from my memories of beautiful landscapes. Painted on deep edge canvas, white edges, ready to hang, no frame needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DRRWQ_9s2g

Gill Bustamante is a professional artist based in East Sussex who creates large semi-abstract landscape, seascape and wildlife paintings in oil on canvas. Her painting style is very distinct and often fuses art-nouveau, impressionist and semi-abstract techniques with traditional portraiture that reflect her love of nature, animals, birds and the flora and fauna of the landscapes around her. She loves the ancient landscapes of England and her paintings often reflect the magical elements that such landscapes have. Gill’s main working method has been the development of a painting style she terms ‘memory impressionism’. This method involves going walking somewhere, looking at and absorbing the things she sees and experiences, and then returning home to her studio to try and capture an echo or essence of the place from memory - including any wildlife she may have seen. By this method, she captures precise moments in times at different seasons and the feeling she has about them. Gill completed a fine art degree in Brighton in 1983 and has painted since she was three. In her own words: “Painting always makes me happy along with cake, bunnies, driving erratically, BBC 6 music and totally irreverent comedy”.
