About The Artwork

A watercolor interior inspired by Belgian Symbolist Ferdinand Khnopff’s 1891 oil painting “I lock the door upon myself.” I kept the moody, autumnal atmosphere of the original and the dreamy gaze of the subject but tightened the composition for a more claustrophobic effect. I also included three mourning cloak visitors (who seemed to fit the fin de siècle mood) and added some anachronisms, such as the Magritte-esque bowler hat man, the gold wristwatch, as well as one other… Can you spot it?

Decades of dedication to the unforgiving medium of watercolor have given Paul Pitsker the control and mastery to make paintings that look uniquely different from most watercolors, with brilliant color, dramatic contrasts, and an almost photographic level of fine detail. His paintings depict staged dramas involving delicate creatures caught in absurd or poignant predicaments, to invite reflection on the fragility and transience and strangeness of life, as well as its intrinsic beauty. Paul Pitsker is a mentor to many thousands of artists of all ages on social media, sharing his tips and tricks for watercolor painting and answering questions from students as well as professional artists all around the world. Some of his watercolor choices are unconventional, such as painting only on ultra-smooth hot-press paper, or using a limited palette of just a half dozen paint colors chosen for their permanence and color intensity. The result of these unusual choices and the artist's complete control of the medium results in strikingly original artworks that attract attention and inspire ongoing contemplation and discussion.
