About The Artwork

Inventory number: 201711005 Title: The Inbetweener Size: 20”x20” Medium: Oil Support: 360g Gesso Canvas Date of production: 11/2017 Status: Ready to hang This Painting - The Nyala are among my favourite African antelope but this young male really impressed me. Judging by his horns’ development I put him at about a year old. His mother and a few other female herd members stood close by as he looked over his shoulder towards them. I imagined he was nearing adulthood and had begun considering his future as a lone bull. He appeared to be contemplating his departure as he had been looking into the landscape and then back to his herd. In reality he may have been thinking only of his next mouthful but it was fun to watch and wonder. Nyala - The Nyala antelope shows a marked sexual dimorphism in size with a large male and a much smaller female. As a result the male is known as a bull in common with the larger antelope species and the female a ewe in common with the smaller antelopes. Young males are camouflaged by their colour pattern which resembles that of a female. This protects them from the aggressive behaviour of the dominant male. The Nyala bull is one of the most colourful antelopes on the African continent. It is a medium sized antelope with a build similar to that of a bushbuck and the face of a kudu. The adult Nyala bull weighs between 92-126 kg, has a shoulder height of 104-121 cm and an apron of exceptionally long hair. Their colour varies from a light chestnut to a chocolate-brown that darkens with age to a dark greyish-black. There are 10-14 vertical, parallel, white stripes on the flanks. Nyala ewes are much smaller weighing only 54-68 kg and have a shoulder height of 82-106 cm. Ewes are often mistaken for bushbuck ewes. They are a bright, chestnut brown and lack the furry coat of the bull. Nyala are naturally restricted to environments that are both humid and well wooded. Only adult bulls have well developed horns, occasionally ewes are found with rudimentary, malformed horns. Different nyala groups often gather together in sharing a good fodder source, temporarily tolerating each other’s presence with little aggression. Mature bulls become solitary while ewes and young form small herds of only a few individuals. I chose Oil on Stretched Canvas as this is my medium of choice. Oil is a versatile medium allowing for the creation of brilliant light and colour. Strong colour dominates my work so oil is an obvious choice. It is also the medium of quality art through the ages and because of its slow drying allows me to work detail. Oil also has good archival qualities and paintings done in oil, following good technical practices can last for generations to come honouring the buyer’s investment in my work. This painting is ready to hang, coated with a clear coat of Alkyd resin which provides a tough layer protecting the surface from minor bumps and scratches, cleaning efforts and minor temperature changes. The Alkyd also provides a semi satin finish with more gentle reflections than a gloss finish and more quality than a matt finish.

My approach to my art is born from a happy place and a desire to portray the beauty in people, who fascinate me, from personalities to unique structure and traits. I strive to portray the inner narrative of a subject rather than simply reproducing the features. After some contemplation it became clear to me that the inner narrative of the subject is by its very nature exclusive of the viewer and the conversation is an inner one, it therefore excludes the viewer from the narrative is a mildly voyeuristic way and so the lack of a direct gaze has developed in importance quite unconsciously. I like to imagine what the subject may be thinking and strive to bring that through in my depiction of the person. I strive to create a feeling of the subject being quite unconscious of, or at least, unaffected by, the viewers gaze. Light is very important to me as a painter, I am intrigued by the play of light either direct strong light or the lack of it, on the features of the subject. Each face has its own subtitles and skin qualities and exploring how the flesh plays with the light brings me enormous satisfaction. As a result of this my brush strokes are varied from one piece to the next, some being bold in an attempt to portray masculinity or dramatic emotion. Others are softer, more feminine, in an attempt to portray a moment of peace and serenity. Similarly my colours are exaggerated, either exceptionally cool out of direct warm light or strong transitions in direct light. I am often more satisfied when I get the feeling of a slight mystery behind the expression or movement of my subject and I feel the first hand experience of the subject I get from taking my own photographs and working from life, are a huge asset in attempting to capture the moment on canvas. Ultimately I strive to portray that fleeting moment as a thought passes, and just when I feel I have it, I feel I have lost it and so the search for the fine balance between portrait and internal dialogue plays out in each of my portraits. I hope I will never quite achieve it. "Dalene’s art took her into a career in graphic design and kept her there for half a lifetime, producing some designs most people would recognise on the supermarket shelves, but she did not neglected her fine art.
