About The Artwork

This Diptych painting is about human hypocrisy. People hide their true identities behind golden masks and behind luxurious objects such as dresses but deep down they are naked and vulnerable. In the painting a man and a woman are portrayed in order to show that the issue of hypocrisy applies to people of all genders, all races and all ages. It is a universal issue. People such as the man on the left side of the artwork cling on fake realities and fake identities and people like the woman on the right get attached and become one and the same with their masks - fake personas. The two red curtains on the sides of the artwork represent the theatre stage because life is a play and each of us must play a part. On the left, the day sky represents the opening scene and on the left the night sky represents the closing scene of the play. The horse and the butterfly are free to run and fly free respectively, emphasising the contrast between them and humans. The desert background on the left represents the hardships and struggles of life; whilst the white and black background on the right represent a chess board because life is also a game, and we are all players in it; it is also a constant contrast between white and black. Furthermore, on the left the Triton shell represents the depth of the soul of the human and from it bubbles come out that represent both bad and good. The bubbles with the bat and scorpion represent all the negative and bad human emotions; whilst the paper boat represents hope for the future. Finally, despite all the obstacles and problems, there is still hope for humanity. That is why there is a paint brush on the right curtain. The brush symbolises that we are all painters of our own reality, and we can all paint our own life story anyway we want. So, we all have the power to paint our own identity and life story. We can all paint our own Life Story!
