VIEW IN MY ROOM
United Kingdom
Painting, Paper on Canvas
Size: 10.5 W x 10.5 H x 1.5 D in
This is my view of St Paul's, 1 London Wall and 140 London Wall and the edge of the Barbican as seen from the balcony studio in the Barbican where I live and work. St Paul's is slightly obscured by the more modern buildings next to it in a way that would probably horrify Prince Charles. For me, this epitomises the modern City which forms the backdrop to the Brutalist Barbican Estate. I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of old and new: the classical forms of St Paul's and the modernist and post-modernist buildings adjacent to it. I have also posted photographs of my particular balcony view on my instagram site entitled "Now you see it, now you don't" because at either end of my balcony, I can see St Paul's both obscured, completely and partially. By playing around with perspective in these photographs and again on my canvases, I am exploring the wider theme in my work of the individual creative perspective and the way the individual carves out a slice of the City for herself. In this case, I've carved out an image of the City skyline - a piece of air out there - which i've created for you here. Unlike Prince Charles, I enjoy the architectural diversity of the London skyline and the way St Paul's can sit effortlessly with its modern secular counterparts shows how our City has developed and is constantly emerging and re-emerging. I seek to illustrate this sense of constant renewal in the process of my art by employing recycled palette papers which I have employed here directly onto the canvas and the landscape is moulded from the textures of these recycled and encrusted palette papers. In this way, I am exploring the theme of recycling the City, in much the same way as architects have done both here in the Barbican and beyond. I am hoping this will in turn make you feel excited about London and value it in all its diversity. I hope it raises questions about what we want and need from a modern City and how we want to keep our sense of history - but also what it takes to recreate a modern city and the importance of recycling what we already have and valuing this.
