About The Artwork

When approaching a new series I document what I find interesting and use this as a way of mapping my ideas. I don’t attempt to capture the landscape but rather try to encapsulate what elements I retain, usually singling out bright colours, heavy contrasts and repetition. Every painting is based on a photograph, but translated into a visual language that makes sense to me and gives prominence to what might seem understated and illusive.

Manon Labrosse is a Franco-Ontarian artist from Northern Ontario. She currently lives in the Outaouais region in the province of Quebec and studied painting at the University of Ottawa. She has been the recipient of the Corel Endowment Fund for the Arts, the Télé-Québec Jury favourite award, as well as a few creative residencies including one in Algonquin Park. She has exhibited in Ontario and Quebec and has received grants from the city of Ottawa, the Ontario Arts Council and the conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Labrosse’ practice is based on experiences in nature : her painting style plays on memory, using her experiences as an adult, documentation of the landscape and an unavoidable connection to growing up in Northern Ontario to create conflicting landscapes of bright colours and dark neutral tones.
