About The Artwork
During his Impressionist years, Renoir developed a fascination with the effect of light passing through foliage to fall as dappled shadows on the ground, and on human forms. Renoir painted this delightful picture out of doors in the shady garden of his studio in Montmarte. He used bright blue for shadows and yellow and pink for pools of dappled sunlight. By contrasting cool with warm colours he was able to suggest the brilliance of a sunny day. He also used blue for the bows on the womans pink dress across which blue shadows dance. Behind, dots of light break up the blue shadow on the path into a rich pattern. His hand written list recording that day reveals he favoured Cobalt Blue and French Ultramarine and did not use ‘Black’ at all.
