About The Artwork

"Thin Section 4 (the picnic)" Original watercolor and acrylic based ink painting on paper. The Thin Section series name is inspired by the practice in the science of geology of making very thin slices of a piece of rock like sliced cheese from the deli counter. This slice of material can then be examined in whole new ways, revealing previously unknowable details about the material. A geode may look like a ball of mud externally, but sliced thin and illuminated from below it exhibits supernatural beauty. I call this piece the picnic because it has a calm energy like a peaceful lunch under a canopy of trees by a lake. It has the blues of a still body of clean fresh water, the greens of a healthy forest, and even the reds and whites of a stereotypical checked picnic blanket. This is not a literal interpretation, more like free association.
