About The Artwork
This painting was created in my previous Sheffield city centre studio. An old market building opposite my studio window was being demolished so an abstraction seemed most appropriate to evoke a sense of the changes emerging. I was fascinated by the way the human eye tends to focus on one detail and subsequently blurs other details. Light and form is very important in this work. The season it was created in (Autumn 2014) is reflected in the earth tones of the final piece. 'Through the window' is part of a series of abstract paintings focussing on industrial/semi-industrial landscapes. I hope the painting creates a dialogue with the viewer that encourages them to re-focus on a routine action of looking from a window in an urban setting. The oils are of high quality, responsibly sourced canvas wooden stretcher and I use an ECO Green alternative to traditional turpentine.

I draw my inspiration from the constant possibilities of painting and the challenge of its unpredictable nature in conveying a subject. I am most interested in the process of painting and the expression it provides, translating a depth of feeling that is both personal but also shared with the viewer. Psychotherapy has directly influenced recent work and renewed my interest in abstract expressionism with the freedom of colour, line and allowing the subconscious and memory to guide my work. My current work explores the raw emotions I have experienced through personal challenges including the corrosive effects of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), infertility and a recent incurable auto-immune disease diagnosis. Whilst these experiences are highly personal, I believe that by exploring those emotions in my work I am creating a voice where one might normally be at risk of being suppressed and hidden.
