This is a recent work that was made at The Residency At 821 in Asheville, NC. It is one of the largest of my Rorschach paintings to date and suggests many different images to viewers. While at the residency, I documented random viewer's responses to this work and the following is a list of representational images that they imagined within: landmasses, the ocean, colliding waves and dragons. My abstract paintings are inspired by Rorschach tests and are part of an ongoing project to document the subjectivity of perception. Like cloud watching, people always see different images within these paintings. At times their visual projection is a shared experience, but mostly, we’re never looking at the exact same picture. The ongoing question is, what are the sources for people’s unique responses? I have come to include memory, mood and degree of imagination.

Artist Statement Wyatt Pottorff strives for aesthetic beauty while capturing chaos. His works are characterized by metaphorical figures that represent intense emotions and swirling swaths of paint that signify changing perspective. Painting allows him to re-contextualize complex life moments and imbue them with a sense of gratifying simplicity. He hopes these images convey an embracement and adoration for the ever changing and disordered world that we live in. Bio Wyatt James Jackson Pottorff grew up in a small town in New Mexico. In Deming, Wyatt spent his early years doodling, painting, climbing on roofs and exploring derelict buildings and the desert with friends. His art often depicts altered worlds, animals and fierce characters. Stylistically his work is most influenced by Surrealist, Abstract Expressionist and Futurist art movements. In addition to a studio practice, Pottorff also manages a Southwestern clothing brand, Desert Funk. He is a graduate of the University of New Mexico’s studio art program, and has exhibited in several galleries including the Shockboxx Gallery in LA, Site Santa Fe in Santa Fe, NM as well as the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC. Currently he lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
