Time and Tide Painting

Currently on loan to International Law Firm in City of London for one year starting August 2021. It is still for sale however and can be delivered to you August 2022. The recent Artwork of Katy Sayers Green relates to her interest in Encaustic painting - an ancient technique that uses layers of heated beeswax, to which pigments and mixed media are added. It is a medium that appeals strongly to the senses. The seductive process of Encaustic is currently enjoying a huge revival in USA and it is where Katy discovered its possibilities, whilst on a scholarship residency to New York, 2010. However, it still remains unusual in UK. Katy's paintings in Oil and Acrylic take inspiration from the qualities inherent in the Encaustic process. Here, she also aims for a translucent, shimmering quality so that within the finished image the viewer can see or partially see what has gone on before. The multi layers act like windows upon windows. By this process, the artwork transmutes into a mysterious, unknown new entity that is much more than the sum of its parts. Akin to Alchemy, it is a seemingly magical process of transformation. The subject is at once recognisable and yet not quite recognisable; occupying the space of metaphor and yet drawing inspiration from the natural world. Katy is interested in all that is fleeting. Whether the subjects are clouds scudding over pools, ripples over water or shadows hovering on a spring day; perhaps it is in these elusive and transitory events that Eternity can be glimpsed. In this case the subjects are freshwater pools, sea-tides and the passage of time.
