The subject is a young emerging artist known as Octavian. The painting was created to display my style ahead of a future commission for the musician and his collective. As an artist, there is an inevitable struggle against the tempest of other creatives that represent both inspiration and competition. Competition both created by a capitalist arena and the desire to be heard and understood in a world where the individual can feel so insignificant. Such surroundings foster change and adaptation; they motivate reinvention from an artistic perspective, as the subject must struggle to stand apart from the crowd. In the face of this struggle, the subject’s cold and unconcerned gaze maintains a quiet confidence in his demeanor, displaying the belief in self that I believe to be the most important quality of an artist. This painting examines the consistency necessary to develop integrity and identity and its inexorable struggle against the reinvention necessary to evolve. The hands show the inevitable intervention of change as the portrait is still being made, exploring the idea that perfection can never be reached as the process of growing has no end. The five circles below the portrait are the raw colours I used; they represent that, at its core, our individuality must be garnered from its raw form. The painting’s overriding subject of analysis is the dichotomy between the mutability and the consistency that is inherent in the growing process of any individual, both caused and defined by our struggle with our environment.
