About The Artwork

One in an ongoing series of experimental paintings created by mono printing glass paint in multiple layers. Paint is pored onto a board before glass is pressed down creating a print that varies depending on the pressure applied, whether the different colours have been initially been allowed to blend and the manner in which the glass is lifted away. The layer is dried and the process repeated, with choices for the next informed by the last. The challenge and joy of this technique is the attempt to achieve balance and harmony from a process essentially governed by chaos. With each new press I learn more about how to work with what has come before, giving me increasing influence over the finished piece - but it is the act of working with, rather than against that lack of control that gives the pieces their nuance and the sense of freedom for me as the artist.

I have a deep interest in paradox - this theme threads through my work which is otherwise varying in style. I work predominantly in oil and with experimental techniques with Vitrail glass paint. Whatever the medium my process is very much intuitive - though some initial planning is always involved each piece is a result of getting lost and finding my way home again. I make art to try to understand the human condition, the Buddhist doctrine, to process my own memories and emotions, work out things that confuse me and just to create beauty. Whether working in abstract or figurative, I attempt to get to the heart of nuanced emotions, feelings or states of being. Achieving a balance of humour and playfulness with emotional depth is very important to me.
