My Damien Hirst- inspired painting is a comment on how the Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah, and his sister Fatimah Jinnah, (despite playing a highly instrumental role in the formation of Pakistan), are reduced to being mere pop images today. Whether it is the Quaid's face printed on currency notes, trendy T-shirts, mugs, or merely hung in the backdrop of political addresses, his image has become more of a symbol of politics and popular culture rather than what his teachings mean to our nation. I blotted out the Quaid and Fatimah Jinnah's lips to show how their images do not ''speak'' to us anymore- we do not stop to think about their true importance except perhaps, very briefly on Independence Day, sadly nor are they physically present to guide our nation to prosperity. The colourful polka dots in the background are inspired by Damien Hirst's pop art work, and reinforce the idea of the pop-iconisation of the Jinnahs. The title, ''!'' is there to catch our attention, and show that this very idea is alarming.
