About The Artwork

Based on the Venus of Brassempouy ivory figurine created in the Upper Paleolithic period. Discovered in France and dated to about 25,000 years ago, the image represents one of the earliest known representations of the human face. As the first known representations of the human form, the Venus series of female figurines invites us to reimagine their prehistoric meaning. Their interpretation as apotropaic figures, emblems of success and security, goddesses and supreme creators to be revered or worshipped speaks to their significance.
