This is the second painting with as subject a volcano. I stumbled on this subject thanks to a commission. Years ago I was on Stromboli and I was hugely impressed by the fact that the ground we stand on is not as solid as we assume. To show the truth, one has to tell a good lie. Inspiration, even if not very visible, are the late paintings by Turner.
