Wasteland Painting

This piece was inspired by an old photo I came across in American history class. The haunting and majestic sepia-toned photos captured the Native Americans of this country in an incredibly subdued intensity. I wanted to contrast an image of what I saw in the photo with a background that captured what I really felt when I saw the image. I chose to paint the child with her doll with a fine soft camel-haired brush while creating the background with a palette knife. The process of using these two very different tools also captured for me the essence of what I wanted to express visually. A delicate and violent union.
