It was written by Lorde and producer Joel Little after the two were paired by her A&Rrepresentative Scott MacLachlan. Musically, "Royals" is an art pop and electropop song with influences of hip hop music, R&B, and indie pop. The track's lyrics express a disapproval with the sumptuous lifestyle presented by contemporary artists in their songs and music videos. "Royals" received widespread acclaim from music critics, who praised its songwriting, Little's production, and Lorde's vocal performance. Since its release, the track has appeared on various critics' year-end and decade-end song lists. The single garnered international chart success, reaching the number one spot in New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the US Billboard Hot 100, where it reached the summit for nine consecutive weeks. "Royals" sold 10 million units worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all-time. The song's music video was directed by Joel Kefali which premiered on Lorde's YouTube channel on 12 May 2013. It consists of ordinary teenagers in mundane settings with minimal shots of Lorde interspersed. "Royals" won awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2014 Grammy Awards as well as the APRA Silver Scroll Award. Lorde performed the track on her two major concert tours: Pure Heroine Tour (2013–14) and Melodrama World Tour (2017–18). I’m (I am?) a self-taught artist, originally from the north suburbs of Chicago (also known as John Hughes' America). Part of the preface to the 'Complete Works of Emily Dickinson helps sum me up as a person and an artist: "The verses of Emily Dickinson belong emphatically to what Emerson long since called ‘the Poetry of the Portfolio,’ something produced absolutely without the thought of publication, and solely by way of expression of the writer's own mind. Such verse must inevitably forfeit whatever advantage lies in the discipline of public criticism and the enforced conformity to accepted ways. On the other hand, it may often gain something through the habit of freedom and unconventional utterance of daring thoughts. In the case of the present author, there was no choice in the matter; she must write thus, or not at all.
