Husbands, children, friends aside... at the end of the day, our most influential relationships are with what we spend the most time with. Our society has an obsession with hot and cold beverages, coffee and tea. They dictate how we start our morning, how we choose a spot to relax with a friend on a Saturday afternoon, how we will warm ourselves at night by the fire.
I didn't start drinking coffee until mid-way through my 20's. Now I have a cup of tea in the morning, a cup of coffee just before lunch, and another cup of tea in the afternoon. I rarely finish the dredges as they grow cold at the bottom of the mug, waiting for a refill. As I work on my computer trying to inspire designs for my clients, I often stare into the bottom of the cup, watching it swirl and cool and wait.
This is the first of a series of explorations of this relationship to coffee and tea.

Heavily-laid acrylic on simple canvas. Texture is smooth with rough patches of thick paint.

Working as a character and prop designer most days, my job is all about 'coloring inside the lines.' Fine art is a lot of different things to different people. To me, it's a relationship of liberation and the severing of controlling elements. I explore my world of common objects with a restless impatience for perfection and a bold exploration of color.
