Ships in a Box
Ancient maps of the oceans were frequently populated with depictions of sea monsters. The edges of these maps represented areas that were unexplored, and were referred to as ‘Mare Incognitum’, which is Latin for ‘Unknown Sea’. In present times, the sea has been explored, but we are still heading, in a way, into uncharted waters. Accidental oil spills, over-fishing, illegal polluting and rising temperatures are changing the oceans in a way that we can only guess at. This latest body of work represents a new voyage into the unknown. Odyssey was an oil tanker in operation from 1971 to November 10, 1988, when an explosion caused it to sink in the North Atlantic. The resulting spill remains one of the largest oil spills in world history. The tanker was 700 nautical miles off the coast of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia when it sank and released 132,157 tons (43 million gallons) of oil into the ocean. By way of comparison, 4.3 times as much oil was spilled by the Odyssey as from the much more famous Exxon Valdez.
