Small Birds Study No.1 Painting

Oil on linen 16h x 20w inches by contemporary artist Sara Richardson My Small Creature Series is about imagined relationships between birds or other creatures...and even creating the potential for a character to live outside of the canvas in the viewers imagination. The seemingly simplistic compositions are loaded with what’s happening between the creatures. As if a drama is unfolding. My entire objective is to venture into a realm where I am creating complex emotional exchanges however obvious or profoundly subtle. I originally began with birds in different positions including one or two that were either sleeping, ill or passed away depending on the viewers interpretation. I’m not afraid to paint sorrow or tragedy. Since then, I have several canvases in the mix that are just plain sweet. Not synthetic sweet, but endearingly playful sweet.
