The work is inspired by the artist’s German poem Rűckkehr whose text and English translation is found at http://www.ottolaske.com/documents/German-Complete.pdf. Outwardly appearing as a stylized human face, it renders the artists adolescent experience of his father’s return from the Russian Gulag after WWII in which individuals did not count. The work makes visible that, rather than being a mere ‘return’ (Rűckkehr), the father’s re-appearance was experienced as a visitation from another world, perhaps the underworld, of which the young son had no understanding. The work is composed of two dimensions of like color, one serving as background, the other as foreground, coalescing into an abstract face looking sideways. In the foreground, situated in the curvy enclosure, several black and colored windows open to the boy, all of them both opaque and threatening. The two upward pointing colored strokes emerging from bottom left express the boy’s timid and incomplete embrace of the returning father not seen for years. The image articulates the boy’s request that the visitor ‘overcome me with streaming love’, to compensate for the weak embrace he was able at first to muster. The work is printed on Hot Press Fine Art Smooth Bright White paper (an acid free, 100% cotton rag media with a bright textured finish, yielding an extremely high color gamut and black density). It is signed and numbered by the artist, accompanied by a CoA, and shipped without hanging hardware, in a very sturdy tube protected against folding and puncture.

I am an experimental artist working in digital painting, graphics, abstract photography, animation, and textile design. My work is abstract in the sense that I invent shapes, colors, and textures without reference to representational concerns. Working entirely digitally, I consider the boundaries between domains of visual art as entirely permeable. Since I work with a large variety of tools aided by a mastery of controlled random, the outcome of my composition and design processes are unpredictable; their results often straddle the line between established visual-art categories. The majority of my visual work is found on SaatchiArt where my musical compositions and German and English poetry are found at www.ottolaske.com. Outside of my artistic work, I am the founder and director of the Interdevelopmental Institute (IDM), a graduate-level teaching institute for those interested in adult-developmental thinking and research.
