About The Artwork

The micrographs and videos you see here, can be simulated to intimate 'moving' paintings which gaze into a phenomenon; inviting the viewer to submerge within the realms of ethereal and hidden depths. Observing with microscope and polarising lenses, I track the liquid as it warms and cools, the textures and phases of the liquid seems to draw in the viewer to witness matter's characteristics of its course of movement. We can see with the help of the polarization, allowing us to see full colour spectrum. The images here are REAL, filmed in real time and not computer generated. The liquid crystal is stunning to watch the writhe and flow inviting sensory perception. The scientists tell me its the supermolecular structure of polar smectic phases that make it so unique and separates it from other molecular structures. It appears to take us to another world. It tests our senses and questions our perception of the hidden depths, currents and influences of the movement of matter. Because these images here are time based shots - they run in sequences of up to 10 ( prints) and can be seen in The Liquid Crystal Collection as sets. I found liquid crystal when I was studying Fine Art BA (Hons) at Byam Shaw at Central Saint Martins London. I had been looking at liquid light but liquid crystal was what I'd been searching for. I took up Artist Residency at LCI Ohio USA and spent the winter of 2005 in a laboratory chasing bubbles and analysing the flow of the liquid crystal using microscopes, petrie dishes and tiny files of liquid crystal. I won some photographic awards in UK for my work with liquid crystal in 2005 and 2008. I work from my studio in Hertfordshire UK Special thanks to LCI Ohio USA

My work is varied but all connected by nature. I microphotograph science, often liquid crystal DNA - using microscopes and cameras, I paint mainly in oils, subject matter often nature, gratitude, fantasy and science. I forage ethically from nature - to make sculpture. The movement of matter, has long been a fascination, considering it’s rhythm, influences and the nature of its many transcending journeys, often relating to the Fibonacci and Golden Ratio shaping life in our beautiful world. Frequency is a connected interest. Liquid Crystal is a 21st Century essential ingredient for global communication. Delivering fast delivery of internet, sensors, LCD screens, for hospitals and industry sensors. These are all made from liquid crystal but we rarely get to see it, in its raw state. Most of these images here are time lapsed and often in sequence shots, taken with a polarising lens microscope. They're mainly stills from a 4-minute video, available on Vimeo. As I work, I am consistently shining the light of holistic beliefs of intentions and gratitude, into the darkness, revealing the truth but to spread the net of golden light unifying our human consciousness. I have worked as an ‘Art Therapist’ volunteer for a national organisation in Letchworth Hertfordshire, who work with members of the Homeless society and people with various debilitating, addictions. A very important role for me, designing art sessions particularly encompassing and encouraging self care and awareness of divine energy to small precious groups.. Beginning art therapy classes with a group meditation was groundbreaking in bringing the group of strangers together.
