About The Artwork

Multiple time-lapse photographic "redoxes" of trains, with composite layers and distortions, manipulated in painterly form. A contemporary abstract expression that evokes the scale and gravity of mid-century canvases from afar. A "redox blemish" is a metallic reaction that abrades the film emulsion -- much like smearing and re-working layers of oil paint -- as colored spots that grow and erode the surface. Brooklyn and Manhattan. I keep returning to a space between painting in the abstract expressionist tradition -- my first, early passion for two-dimensional work as a lifelong New Yorker -- and photographic imaging, after my advanced training in motion and still photography. I am most pleased when works arise that bridge the rigor and hand-worked gesture of a monumental canvas with the exhilaration and speed of mass transit exposures in the pulsating city. Edition of 5 + 1 A/P and 1 P/P. Printed exclusively for the artist by Brooklyn Editions' Master Printmaker, New York City. Hahnemühle Photo Rag Bright White 310 gsm, with Hahnemühle Certificate of Authenticity. Archival pigment inks printed with Epson P20000.

PRÉCIS + PROCESS + PAST-PRESENT: PRÉCIS: Light continuously shifts and suffuses. Never quite known, light occasions fresh perspectives for the attentive eye. Photography for me inhabits a space somewhere between poetry and motion picture film, my primary areas of advanced training. INSPIRATION: As many of my recent photos were taken in New York, I sometimes reflect upon the wisdom of gifted New York photographer, Saul Leiter. Leiter suggests, "there are things that are out in the open, and there are things that are hidden, and life has more to do, the real world has to do, with the things that are hidden. You think?" I offer my recent work in a spirit of discovery, a search for "the things that are hidden." PRINTMAKING PROCESS: Signature editions printed exclusively for the artist by Brooklyn Editions' Master Printmaker, New York City. PAST-PRESENT: I grew up as an artist, and gradually branched into other media. Crossing boundaries and investigating form naturally extend my creative and writerly output. Earlier, I worked on aesthetics with late philosopher Jean-François Lyotard. Temporal and phase transitions -- chemical, Kantian, disjunctive -- and a delight in the process of naming inform and inflect my work.
