This work shows children having fun, absorbed in the enjoyment of being in water and with one another. They could be any of us, indulging our own unselfconscious delight in being in the warm and inviting sea. The images were originally recorded in Italy on digital video and digital techniques are used to link together successive momentary images, and to reveal minute sequential fragments of time and activity within a pictorial space. I have invented my own ways of combining digital with handcrafted techniques, and I use a shallow bas relief to try and animate the typically mechanical and processed character of the flat digital print with a hint of the three dimensionality and other qualities of colour, texture and surface of bathers and water. The relief surface gently breaks through the picture plane and enters the space of the viewer, to give an impression of figures who appear to swim within the surface of the work. This quirky, even dreamlike work celebrates the minute, inconsequential, but often surprising moments of everyday life. Repetition and small variations of movement and gesture appear as though frozen, isolated from the familiar flow of time and space, and enhanced by the incessant motion of the sea. Please note that the image is bonded onto board and framed in white wood without glass, frame size 104 x 74.5 x 3.5 centimetres

My obsession with art began with drawing and painting in childhood. My work arises from a delight in light, colour and the handling of paint and other media, and a great curiosity about the things I see, as well as how to explore and exploit the behavior of materials, media and processes in new ways, and an intense curiosity about the things which I see and collect. I am interested in a range of subjects and methods, from drawing and painting still life, landscape and other subjects from observation, to more non-representational, digital and process-based approaches, which are often in shallow bas relief, and are always evolving. I like to work with a variety of approaches, which are usually determined by states of light and times of day, week and year. I have painted from landscapes in Italy and here in South Wales over many years. My painting from landscape subjects is featured in a brief documentary which can be seen at https://youtu.be/jDybZDwerSE. I like to visit as many major exhibitions as I can in London, and have travelled extensively to look at both traditional and contemporary art in the major Museums and Galleries in Europe and elsewhere. I was born in London in 1947 and studied painting at the Gloucestershire and Royal Colleges of Art in the UK, where I graduated with an M Art (RCA) in 1972. After one year as an Abbey Major Scholar in Rome, I went on to teach at Cardiff and other Colleges of Art, and was Director of the Foundation Course in Art and Design there from 1992 until I retired in 2008. I am now a full time practising artist and exhibit regularly in both group and solo exhibitions in the UK and overseas, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, London Group Open and the “Discerning Eye” Exhibitions in London, where I have twice won prizes for my work, and which is included in many collections in the UK and overseas. It can be seen on my website at , and my Instagram account . I live and work in Cardiff in the UK, and am a member of the Bute Street Artists studio group there.
