Reduction to essence: a torso, a curve, a shadow that doubles and deepens the form. The figure rises from darkness without a face, without context, without anything that could distract from the pure sculptural fact of the body in light. This is chiaroscuro at its most absolute — not as style, but as...

Kevin Feriani — known as The Poet of Light — is an Italian fine-art photographer born in 1975. His practice began in 1988, and across nearly four decades has evolved into one of the most recognizable and uncompromising visual languages in contemporary portrait photography.
He works from a single room: a living space converted into a studio, with a black backdrop, a handful of flash units, and a vintage wind machine. No professional infrastructure. No elaborate sets. What others build in post-production, Feriani constructs entirely in camera — in real time, through the precise choreography of light against absolute darkness. Post-production rarely exceeds fifteen minutes per image.
His method is one of radical subtraction. Darkness, in his work, is not a background — it is the raw material. Light does not illuminate it; it carves through it, extracting presence, vulnerability, and the inherent dignity of the people he portrays. Ordinary individuals encountered in everyday life become, under his lens, figures of timeless intensity — sculpted, not photographed.
This approach places Feriani in direct conversation with the great tradition of pictorial chiaroscuro, from Caravaggio to Rembrandt — yet his work belongs entirely to the present. He does not quote the past; he reworks it through a contemporary and deeply personal gaze.
His practice extends beyond fine-art into therapeutic photography — a process dedicated to those who struggle to recognize their own worth. In his portraits, the image becomes a space of transformation: a place where identity is perceived, perhaps for the first time, as something whole, meaningful, and worthy of being seen.
Feriani has exhibited publicly in Italy, including at Calici in Villa 2025 (Zero Branco, Treviso) and Arte in Riva al Fiume (Tezze sul Brenta), and has participated in Woman in Expo 2024. His debut monograph, States of Light: the Trilogy — structured in three chapters (Emerging from Darkness, Sculpting with Light, Silent Venice) — collects fifty photographs across 142 pages and is available in hardcover, paperback, and digital editions.
