In this picture, Roy Lichtenstein is hiding behind a giant brush as if playing charades with the viewer. Even someone unfamiliar with the famous contemporary artist would have little trouble receiving the picture's message, telegraphed in boldface: this person is, first and foremost, a painter. And not just any painter, but a painter of magnitude, judging by the size of the brush. I further layered this image with nuanced references for the cognoscenti. The brush in this instance is a wall-paper brush, alluding to the period when Lichtenstein supported his family by doing wall-paper for his wife's decorating business. I don't just arbitrarily use props, the props refer to the person's ouevre. The simplest gestures can describe somebody. You get into a kind of child-like play that connects you to your primal self.
