The back-story. It was spring 2008 and I was on a road trip exploring The American West. Early one morning I found myself shooting an abandoned home in The Redwood Forest of California. A number of the home’s contents had been thrown out, scattered around the yard, and one piece was a very seventies, trashy looking couch. As I clicked away I was aware of something behind me, and as I turned, there to my amazement and fright was a large male elk, head down, grazing slowly along, having his morning meal. He was so overwhelmingly big that my first thought was to gently collapse my tripod and make a quiet exit. I then however made a very smart decision and decided to stay put. I concluded that if the elk continued on his present track, sooner or later he would be standing next to the couch, perfectly positioned in my viewfinder. Twenty-five minutes later, just as I had hoped for, the elk appeared in my viewfinder, positioned as if a taxidermist had placed him there, resulting in one of the most unusual photographs I have ever taken. The offer. Reproduced in color, there are only two copies of this image, one in The Montclair Art Museum in Montclair, NJ and the other in Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Mesa, Arizona. It has never been sold in any size. I am offering for sale, two 20”x30” dye-sublimation prints of this image, one in color and one in black and white. You may select which version you prefer or you may purchase both. The price is $20,000.00 per piece, color or B&W. The buyer will receive a notarized letter from me stating that his copies will be the only reproduction of this image, in any size, that will ever be made. A truly unique purchase to keep in your family or as a gift for a special friend or client, guaranteed not to be seen anywhere else in the world. I’ve been professionally shooting for just shy of forty years, and I consider the circumstances that came together to make this photograph happen a once in a career event. George Diebold
