About The Artwork

I recently completed two Monterey Pines as a pair... partly for practical reasons (drying/working times), partly aesthetic (there's a life/death story going on here...) This first one of these nearby Brownstone Trees (near Dartmouth/Devon/UK) is at the end of its natural life; burnt to a cinder, its massive Cones have to be opened by fire in order for the seeds to be released & subsequently germinate. the second is of a Tree in its prime - this Sold a day after I completed it, so I didn't have the opportunity to put it on here! Monterey Pines have been thriving in the mild, Coastal conditions here since being introduced somec 200 years ago; they grow & reach maturity very rapidly, returning to humus within 80/90 years, where they break down even quicker than they grow to provide the nutrients for the next generations. the charred, cracked areas in this piece were achieved by using a combination of printed blacks & black inks, which were masked off with fluid & then overprinted with lighter shades of grey

Stewart has been a Printmaker for over 30 years, & was recently selected for the 16th Graphica Creativa Print Triennale where the Jyväskylä Art Museum acquired his work from the exhibition. He also has works in the V&A Museum print collection. He has now been selected for The Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for the 6th consecutive time, featuring in co-founder Jack Bullen's top 10 picks from the 2022 Fair. He also has had recent appearances at both the RA Summer Show & the National Original Print Show, where he won the Great Art Prize at the latter in 2018 for his screenprint, ‘Alcala’. He is continuing onwards with his Tree Portraits series from his Dartmouth studio, which started over 3 years ago in London, prior to his departure to Devon in late 2020. Initially inspired by the street trees of my neighbourhood (he printed over 100 of these at home in the space of 6 months during the first lockdown.), these moved outwards to the parks and the wilds nearby, quickly becoming a conversation about our lack of connectivity with the natural world. There are now well over 300 monoprints in this collection. This suite of prints has been further informeded by starting a small-scale rewilding project in 2019 close to his Devon home. In the past 12 months Stewart has created large-scale Joshua Tree prints from the Mojave National Preserve that were destroyed by the Cima Dome wildfire of 2020; those of deciduous trees from protected forests local to him at Avon Valley Woods, the print giveaway for which funded the ongoing traditional husbandry/management by The Woodland Trust; and trees from the banks of the Danube in Slovakia, that were photographed for me by fellow artist Eva Boda. Further collaborations with other artists & photographers are ongoing. This series will continue to help raise awareness for protecting our environment, including through donating prints for various progressive conservation & rewilding fundraisers, both in the UK & USA. by the close of 2023, Stewart will have featured in 11 exhibitions, 4 Art magazines & 3 online articles. Stewart was previously a keyholder at East London Printmakers for over a decade, where he was Project Leader of the Mile End/Copperfield Road Studio Build for the move from London Fields/Warburton Road. During my time there he worked exclusively in screenprint, whilst simultaneously working as a media professional in the City.
