Captain America, the real name is Steven Grant "Steve" Rogers, is an American comic book character created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1941, and published in the United States by Timely Comics and later by Marvel Comics. Captain America was designed as a patriotic supersolder who often fought the Axis powers of World War II and was the most popular character in Timely Comics during the war period. Born as an element of propaganda during the Second World War as a symbol of the free and democratic America that opposed the liberticide Nazi Germany, "Cap" immediately met with great success (the first issue of the series sold almost a million copies and the following remained on these levels, surpassing magazines like Time) and became the most popular character of the publisher, even leading to the birth of a fan club called "Sentinels of Liberty". With the end of the conflict he lost his popularity, despite an attempt to revive him as a communist hunter during the early years of the Cold War, until in 1964 Stan Lee decided to propose it as a compact in the Avengers series, depriving it of nationalistic elements and endowing it with a whole new sensibility and humanity, making him the protagonist of stories of social denunciation and making him the embodiment of America’s consciousness.
