ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In this series of pictures, I'm exploring the ways that colors and images can create and hold ideas - stories, memories and thoughts. Viewers are invited to associate a particular idea with the image, which they can then bring to mind each time they interact with the image - whether it's through a focused time of contemplation or a momentary ping of acknowledgement of the idea when they catch a glimpse of the image. Inspired by: Richard Tuttle, David Hockney, Anne Truitt, James Turrell, Richard Serra, Ellsworth Kelly and so many more... I make digital art by painting and manipulating images with my fingers on a touch screen with the same app David Hockney has been using for his digital imagemaking. I love that direct, tactile connection with the work - touchscreens bridge traditional physical art making with digital, deliberately leaving evidence of human touch.

I’m Jess, an artist living and working in Portland, Oregon. My work is about the way that beautiful images can disrupt and change our habitual ways of thinking and looking — and ultimately change us. My work is very intuitive. It’s informed and inspired by color sensation, minimalism, and experiential “light and space” art movements. I work on each image until I feel everything click into place: that feeling of “rightness” tells me the work is done. I work in series — like chapters in a book or verses in a song. Each one feels like it’s part of a whole that’s always growing and surprising me. My hope is that each piece serves as an invitation, a portal, a totem: a way of getting more deeply attuned to who you are and who you can become. I create my work digitally on a touchscreen with my fingers. The digital techniques I've been developing for a few years are a hybrid of painting, screenprinting and collage. I then print the images using pigment ink on thick,100% cotton fine art paper. Each of my prints is an original work, not a reproduction. The completed prints are completely archival. I’m proud to say my work is up on the walls of collectors in New York, L.A., London, Paris and everywhere in between. Hope you enjoy your time here — and please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or just want to connect!
