About The Artwork

Appropriating historic maps from the public domain collection of the Library of Congress, I attempt to connect the present with the past with digital illustration layered on top of master cartography and engraving. "Fugitive" is a signed, limited edition of 100 Giclee prints on archival Canson Edition Etching paper, printed by Candela Fine Art Printing. The digital illustration provides the routes of the Underground Railroad as described by former slaves during interviews as part of the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) 1936 to 1938. The routes were perhaps most crucial during the Fugutive Slave Law (1850 - 1861) which made seeking freedom, or helping others seek freedom, a federal crime. The map is part of the "Statistical Atlas of the United States Based on the Results of the Ninth Census 1870" by Francis Walker. It's the first time shades of color were used to display numerical values of a population in providing cultural meaning. The 1870 census was also the first time Blacks were individually acknowledged, capturing the same vital statistics as whites, rather than the historical method of using the "Slave Questionnaire".

Working in multimedia such as painting, illustration, film/video, and photography allows me to explore surfaces and circumstances. Born and raised at the edge of the sea, I find inspiration and comfort with materials and subjects that reference lines, boundaries, direction, and the passage of time.
