About The Artwork

This is one of a set of small, monoprint sketches I have created from photos created by Eva Boda as part of a collaboration & discussion around urban & rural spaces, and how they can be managed for the benefit of both people & the regeneration of ecosystems. Eva creates massive abstract paintings via various media – photography, frottage/monoprints, drawing, and digital sketches - from a starting point of abandoned places and spaces. She has recently had a highly successful solo show at the CinCin Gallery in her home city of Bratislava. She often cycles miles out from her urban dwelling into the nearby wilds that skirt the Danube to photograph these environs to feed her own projects. Knowing well of my Tree Portraits she was kind enough to send me a number of photos of the trees from here, some of which had received attention from the local beavers! Having recently christened a series of smaller paintings of hers from her recent exhibition ‘Little Punks’, the beavers involved and these trees I have printed here have also been given the same, ironic moniker which gently mocks the misunderstanding that beavers are a ‘destructive/disruptive’ force, when they are, in reality, the most positive keystone species we have available in this country, in terms of habitat creation and biodiversity. Taking these photos into monoprint extends not only Eva’s processes of deconstructing urban/lost spaces from photography into an organic field, via another hand, also juxtaposes the discussion from her urban settings into the wider environment, where nature can reclaim and repair, but also possibly show a balanced field where both humanity and nature can co-exist. ‘Little Punks IV’ was selected for the curated hang at the 2023 Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair & appeared in the Florence Contemporary Gallery exhibition ‘Unbounded’ 2024.

Stewart has been a Printmaker for over 30 years, & was recently selected for the 16th Graphica Creativa Print Triennale where the Jyväskylä Art Museum acquired his work from the exhibition. He also has works in the V&A Museum print collection. He has now been selected for The Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for the 6th consecutive time, featuring in co-founder Jack Bullen's top 10 picks from the 2022 Fair. He also has had recent appearances at both the RA Summer Show & the National Original Print Show, where he won the Great Art Prize at the latter in 2018 for his screenprint, ‘Alcala’. He is continuing onwards with his Tree Portraits series from his Dartmouth studio, which started over 3 years ago in London, prior to his departure to Devon in late 2020. Initially inspired by the street trees of my neighbourhood (he printed over 100 of these at home in the space of 6 months during the first lockdown.), these moved outwards to the parks and the wilds nearby, quickly becoming a conversation about our lack of connectivity with the natural world. There are now well over 300 monoprints in this collection. This suite of prints has been further informeded by starting a small-scale rewilding project in 2019 close to his Devon home. In the past 12 months Stewart has created large-scale Joshua Tree prints from the Mojave National Preserve that were destroyed by the Cima Dome wildfire of 2020; those of deciduous trees from protected forests local to him at Avon Valley Woods, the print giveaway for which funded the ongoing traditional husbandry/management by The Woodland Trust; and trees from the banks of the Danube in Slovakia, that were photographed for me by fellow artist Eva Boda. Further collaborations with other artists & photographers are ongoing. This series will continue to help raise awareness for protecting our environment, including through donating prints for various progressive conservation & rewilding fundraisers, both in the UK & USA. by the close of 2023, Stewart will have featured in 11 exhibitions, 4 Art magazines & 3 online articles. Stewart was previously a keyholder at East London Printmakers for over a decade, where he was Project Leader of the Mile End/Copperfield Road Studio Build for the move from London Fields/Warburton Road. During my time there he worked exclusively in screenprint, whilst simultaneously working as a media professional in the City.
