This work draws upon some metaphorical parallels with the oleander plant. The plant is known for its beauty, but it’s also toxic if ingested, which can symbolize the dualities faced by African American women - their strength, resilience, beauty, and the challenges and obstacles they’ve encountered throughout history. This shows images depicting the colonization of Africa and the accomplishments of African-American women. When faced with adversity, I equate this toxin as a potent driving force to overcome various struggles, including racial and gender discrimination, to triumph in various fields, such as civil rights, literature, science, and arts. Overall, the oleander plant and African-American women showcase the power of resilience, determination, and the ability to flourish despite hardships.

My work puts some but not all emphasis on twentieth-century iconography and popular culture. This includes music, politics, toys, television, etc. The work expands upon those iconic symbols in a manner that can be satirical, serious, or joyful. It is about ideas and concepts attempting to make sense of modern-day events. It doesn't matter the style or technique as much as the idea. As a contemporary artist, my work has been described as social realism, conceptual and representational. My visual communications career includes art, advertising, graphic design, illustration, animation, and multimedia design. This experience has expanded my ability to deliver ideas in various mediums. However, my number one medium of expression is printmaking. Therefore, I am constantly searching for ways to communicate my ideas through any of the medium's limitations. Unfortunately, my process limits the number of prints I can produce to no more than 25 and sometimes as low as 5.
