I was exploring movement and strong direction when I came up with the sketch for "Gravity No.1 in Fir". I was taking the concept seen in "Crescent No.1" and "Duality No.2" and working off of them. This is the result of the exploration. It's a piece with crisscrossing energy so to speak. The curves and contours are impeccable so as to give the piece that calm, tranquility typical of my work in this concept line. With strong light, interesting shadows can also add to the appreciation of the form (see pictures for some examples). When touched and smelled, the sensations adds to the experience of the piece. Using this fir with high grain contrast really takes the shape well and allows it to show off the beauty of the natural grain pattern. Notice each part of the sculpture has the grain aligned with the form. As with the other sculptures in this "Symbiosis" concept line I wanted the forms to resonate with our deep questions of human nature, to embody a quality of a biological nature and to be expressed as a visual poem using elementary curves and forms as the words.

Planning for this piece, I knew I needed 3 pieces that would be attached, I found this fir wood with high resin content giving it it's striking grain contrast. Fir is tricky to shape due to it's flaky nature but respecting the grain direction is the key to success. The round structure is attached by its end grain and with a dowel, the other two slim parts are attached along the grain. I glued it up in a two part process. Applying the beeswax enriched the grain pattern and deepened the colours of the wood.

The name "Gravity No.1" hints at the free standing nature of the "Symbiosis" concept line group of sculptures (others are in the shop as well). In this particular form, the mass of the round part and the dynamic structural balance of the slim parts trigger the idea of gravity in my mind. I hope the viewer and experiencer appreciates the form in their own way and allows the sculpture to stimulate deep feelings and mystery.
