Carved from a single piece of yellow cedar, Non-Local Movement No.7 displays dynamic relationships between its parts. With attention paid to the grain orientation, the surface patterning delicately cradles the form. The yellow cedar, left natural, brings the viewer into intimate contact with the material. This elemental quality plays an important role in the feel of the piece. Intriguing from many angles, the form will truly stimulate interaction on the 3 dimensional level. The Non-Local series is characterized by multi-directional movement and a certain ironic tension which is—unbeknownst to the parts—ultimately contained within an harmonious whole. Moving in stillness, the form, in its careful refinement stands to invite contemplation on relationship, perception, space/time and emptiness.

Written at the time the final sketch for the sculpture was drawn, this poem may provide insight into the intentions for the piece:

Beyond the horizon,
Over the vast meadows
And behind the majestic mountains,
Far up into the endless sky—
So far inwardly we search
To find only more and more depth,
An endless reservoir of
Dark space—empty potential.
It is here where all meet.
It is here where we are—
The timeless light, the original presence.
