Kirsty Joanna Doig’s dedication to her art has proven to be hugely successful, exhibiting her works both nationally and internationally since her degree in Ceramic Sculpture & Design in 2000 at Duncan of Jordonstone, Dundee. Kirsty’s work often displays an anthropomorphic narrative, subtlety crossing the boundaries of human and animal forms to demonstrate that we connect on many different levels, expressing that ‘it is our physical embodiment, our environment, our culture & life experiences which shape us and make us be who we are’. Her work has an expressive and surreal style to it, demonstrating that both Man and animals are not worlds apart, but very much interconnected. Her latest works are large ceramic individual hares and horse busts, which often display a variety of bronze patina finishes that are one of Kirsty’s signatures. Nature continually teaches us what we most need to learn. The simplicities of nature, as well as our reflective tendencies of what we see and project onto other species, help us to be connected, empathetic & loving. For centuries the Horse and the Hare run deep in many mythologies as they are respected and celebrated for their majestic qualities, their intelligence & sensitivities. Kirsty uses these understandings as a means to connect with the viewer by revealing their quirky personalities and movement as they are formed in her studio. Kirsty believes that clay as a medium allows the fluidity of thought & creation to materialize. Clay is both organic and natural, yet after applied with heat or fire it becomes inorganic. It is this alchemy between those processes that remains a wonderment over the centuries. Clays ability to be transformed and metamorphosed into new boundaries and structural elements by the artist, makes it a true natural alchemy.
