About The Artwork

Shh… we must listen quietly to hear the Ghost Trees tale of megathrust earthquakes along the Cascade Subduction Zone just a few miles off the Pacific Northwest shoreline. It’s only a matter of time, as every 300 years or so tension builds as the Juan de Fuca plate slides beneath the North America plate; the last cataclysmic earthquake occurred in 1700 when the friction between the two plates reached their snapping point. While there’s mystery to be found in the ocean’s roiling, undulating waves, building, rising then dissipating, ceaselessly reforming anew, what’s underneath tells the tale of how a megathrust earthquake can turn those waves into a devastating, fearsome tsunmGhost Tree symbolizes the devastation from such a tsunami; it is up to us to find within ourselves the resilience and hope to survive. Many hours went into GHOST TREE'S creation, from digging sun baked, dry root and cactus fibers out of the desert, to scrubbing, scouring, peeling, hollowing and hand smoothing, with dozens of layers treatment. Cactus fibers form the ocean waves, with found objects and plant fibers found used to create the landscape. GHOST TREE represents the fearsome power of Mother Earth, and how we humans must bend with her power, utilizing resilience and hope to adapt and survive. With the ocean waves illuminating with the changing light, it is my greatest hope GHOST TREE will assist you in the contemplation and building of resilience to survive. – Nath

Nath's inspiration soars on the hot, dry winds sweeping over the southwestern borderlands. The Sonora and Chihuahua desert are where she loves to wander; either on her Harley or on foot, dusty from her boots to floppy hat, pulling and pushing her trusty red wagon down into arroyos and up over rocks. The desert is where Nath finds the sun baked cactus carcasses, roots and plant debris she transforms into art. Hours, weeks, months go into reclaiming these finds, scrubbing and scouring embedded sand, dirt, gravel, peeling off thorns and bark, hollowing and smoothing cavities, carefully picking crusted bark out of whirls, curves and crevasses, carefully separating razor thin cactus fibers. Nath then hand smooths each cactus or root piece, with dozens of treatment coats to harden the fibers to a silky sheen. Sometimes it takes years, but each cactus or root piece reveals itself in time, evincing a feeling and form to be created. Nath creates each piece from the cactus and root carcasses and plant debris she found in the desert and reclaimed with hours of sweat and tears, augmented with additional natural products and art finishes. No matter where where you find her, Nath lives in a desert state of mind; it’s where you can find her when she's dreaming. Nath hopes you'll join her in honoring the hidden treasure of the Chihuahua desert, by bringing one of her pieces into your world.
