I love the narrative story-telling of jack-o-lanterns, tied so closely to traditional halloween stories and the change of seasons. I believe flickering light and shadows from firelight and candles has been an integral part of story-telling throughout human existence, especially before the introduction of electricity. These are jack-o-lanterns that are meant to be part of the longer narrative of this time of year, marking the harvest, the changing light and the long history of halloween in culture, the arts and literature. The sculpture starts conversations, brings smiles and evokes the emotions of mystery and change of halloween. This jack-o-lantern is one of a set of three that I sculpted in wax, created the molds and cast in pewter and finished after removing the cast from the mold, all in my studio and each step of the process done entirely by me. The jack-o-lantern sculptures feel wonderful to hold in the hand. as well as going on a dining room table, a desk or side table. (They comes with an electric LED candle that fits inside, so the jack-o-lantern is easily lit or not lit any time.) It is made of pewter, which is a wonderful tactile and visual material with a long history itself from Colonial times.

I work in wood, resin, pewter, watercolor, sumi ink and other materials to create art that tells stories based on the interplay of light and shadows on organic shapes and spaces as we move through time. I believe stories and narratives are a critical part of what defines humanity, and that throughout human history until the wide dissemination of electric light, stories (oral and visual) were told in the context of sunlight, firelight and candlelight, each of which creates an environment rich in shadows and movement for both the storyteller and the listener. I aim to capture elements of that narrative richness in my art.
