The mosaic sculpture of a chameleon sat on an oversized human skull was created for an exhibition in Germany, Bad Kissingen in 2012, entitled 'On life and death'. It featured a virtual walk through a persons life and one of the highlights was the sculpture 'Life's triumph over death'. Its limestone base is embellished with colorful mosaic, inlaid into the stone while the chess pattern is made off basalt. The chameleon represents life's ability to adapt to changing circumstances as it has been around since the time of the dinosaurs and probably will be when we humans have gone from this world. Its variegated shades in mosaic tiles form a beautiful contrast to the plain white stone that is the skull. All fashioned from one piece of Portuguese limestone.

Germany
Soeren Ernst, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1967. I felt a strong calling to work in the three dimensional from the age of 17. At 19 I worked in the studio of German sculptor Joerg Plickat for a duration of two years. Travelling through Europe as a 'journeyman' I became a young independent sculptor and had first exhibitions in Scotland, where I also won 1st price in 'The arts of Scotland' competition, Pennicuik. On first visiting Portugal in 1989 I fell in love with the country and its people and the great variety of stones available for the sculptor. Since the 1990s I spend the summer in Germany and the winter months in Portugal.
