About The Artwork

It seems to me that this little woman belonged to the Peonian people, and more specifically to the Agrian tribe. She was born in the mountainous region near the present-day border between northern Greece and Bulgaria shortly before these territories came under Macedonian rule (mid-4th century BC). She learned to work leather from an uncle at a very early age. She travelled the length and breadth of her native region as a pedlar, also selling the produce she picked along the way. In her twentieth year, for reasons unknown, she separated from her family and set off on the road. After travelling up the river Vardar, she reached the shores of the Adriatic Sea, which she followed northwards to what is now Croatia, where she settled for several years. She was lost in Trieste when she was around thirty. This piece is made of sandstone, fired several times, then glazed and fired wildly in my studio in Maureillas.
