This piece has been inspired by the twisted forms found in nature and the human mind, and represents the 2nd piece in my new collection "Form". I love working with clay as it lends itself to being manipulated, stretched, torn, twisted and shaped. It's the perfect medium for expressing contorted nature, and I think the beautiful Galaxy blue glaze highlighting the tips of each twisted section was the ideal choice for this piece. The work isn't supposed to make the viewer feel discomfort; on the contrary, its aim is to represent the flow and subtlety resulting from a twisted component. One of the most satisfying elements of this piece is that every viewing angle presents a very different image. It could be displayed on a turning base, so that every "side" can be seen. I believe it could be perceived at its best if lit from below, allowing shadows to form and additional spaces to be revealed. Perhaps it could also be suspended from one of its tendrils? I live with my husband and my daughter in the UK in a small village on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border. We have beautiful countryside from which to draw inspiration, and our garden also provides me with plenty of ideas. I love working with the clay. It´s flexible and yields to any design and form. I throw on the wheel and I also like to work with slabs to create different and more abstract forms. I also like to combine these methods, and I´ll often throw pieces which I then go on to manipulate or reshape in some way - sometimes adding pieces of slab work to a thrown piece. My husband is a woodturner and wood artist, and I really like amalgamating my ceramic and silk work with his wood art. I´m also a keen photographer and enjoy a wide range of art forms and media. I use a lot of the photos I´ve taken in our garden, in the countryside, along the Norfolk coastline etc. as inspiration for my various pieces, whether in clay or silk. Our website gallery & shop holds a more varied range of items that we have both created in our respective studios. We also have an Etsy store which includes different pieces to those shown on our website.
