Alif is the first letter in the Arabic alphabet, and has been the subject of volumes of esoteric science, as it has a special status amongst the letters, in themselves imbued with spiritual meanings. Among other things, the Alif is said to not have been created, but to be the overflow of the primordial point, the first manifestation of reality. This led me to reflect on what was "before Alif", and as it happens, the non-being that precedes existence has also been discussed at length: though absolutely unmanifested, it is far from empty, being full of all possible potentials. I have tried to evoke this invisible richness with a layered geometric pattern, black on black, that crystallizes into the primordial Alif – sharply defined, but on a plain and flat plane of existence. Before Alif is made of paper painted in acrylic, then cut and assembled on mount board. It is framed and ready to hang. Framed size: 50x100 cm

I'm a British-Lebanese artist who moved from Beirut to East London about a decade ago. I'm best known for reviving archaic styles of Arabic calligraphy (the Kufi scripts) and the medieval art materials that accompany them. My work reflects my experience of the world as being alive with mystery. It invites the viewer to step into this forgotten space by holding them in wonder and stillness: in this vulnerable moment, when one is silenced by beauty and by not-knowing, remembrance can stir. To this end, the work takes on different shapes, from images of contemplation made up of unreadable words to multisensory interactive objects that tell an unspoken story.
