Botanical Monologue Print

Botanical Monologues are a series of collages that evolved from transferring left over paint from my palette paper onto other paper while working on my Landscape on Table series. Loving the bold impressions of organic shapes, I couldn't help but see arrangements of different blossoms - the perfect imagery to cheer me up during the isolation of covid. Integrating other remnants of past prints and drawings on paper, graphite, and oil pastel, I worked into the original impressions of paint to help solidify the composition and insert references of my day to day life. Each work is also entitled with a quote about flowers or other things that seemed to reflect what was going on in each collage. This particular piece cites Jane Austen from a letter she wrote to Fanny Knight on March 23rd 1817 which says, "Pictures of perfection as you know make me sick and wicked." - I liked the free wheeling and brutally honest attitude emitted through the writer's words. My hope is that others will sense the energy and tension that exists between the wildness and messiness of the flowers and the perfectly wrapped little package that sits in front of the central subject matter of the work.
